ルカニ村便り/Habari kutoka Lukani - Lukani up date・2009・No.2

In year 2009 the Lukani villagers had a lot of expectations, for example the villagers expected to complete the construction of two class rooms in Lukani Secondary School, but due to financial problem, caused by bad weather, the villagers could not able to complete it.
The villagers also expected to complete the construction of water stream from inside the forest of Mount. Kilimanjaro in order to supply water for irrigation to all villagers surrounding the village area and the neighbors. Again due to the problem in which all the people living around this areas experienced dry weather. Again due to bad weather they couldn't. They are now looking for the assistance from the Central Government.
About Coffee production in general As a result of the low rain fall this year, the Lukani villagers did not harvest much cash and food crops. They had a request of sending Lukani/Lossa coffee to Japan, since the Japanese buyer buy only the highest grade of coffee, Lukani/Lossa Cooperative Society had to wait for long time so that they could buy enough coffee of such grade. Fortunately the villagers had managed to buy a new coffee pulping machine. This machine will easy the preparation of high grade of coffee which is needed by Japanese buyer. Prof. Tsujimura had also paid a visit to the village in August this year and contributed about One Thousand U.S. Dollars in order to assist the farmers. On behalf of Lukani villagers, I am sending many thanks to all Japanese friends who contribute this donation to the Lukani villagers. We hope please receive our heartily thanks. In September this year the villagers had welcomed a group of coffee study tour from Japan . They vested some villagers farms, they also visited the new coffee peeling machine where they could see how the coffee was processing machine it works , washing , then drying , in which the coffee was dried in hygienic martial with a minimum temperature .
About other social services The villagers manage to restart a service in our dispensary which had stopped for some years, now they are able to get clinical services near to their residence. The villagers also welcomed Japanese TV (NHK) crew in early December.
These are several events took place in Lukani this year.

2009年は村にはたくさん期待していることがあった。たとえば村人たちは、ルカニ中学校の2教室の建設を終えるはずだったが、悪天候による経済的困難からそれができなかった。
また、村とその周辺の地域に灌漑用の水供給のためのキリマンジャロ山の森から水路建設プロジェクトの完成も期待されていた。が、雨不足のために終えることができず、今は中央政府からの支援を要請している。
コーヒー生産一般に関して 今年の降水量が少なかった結果として、村では換金作物も自家消費作物も収穫が少なかった。ルカニ・ロサー（隣村）のコーヒーを日本に送って欲しいという要請があった。日本は最高級の品質のコーヒー豆しか買い入れないので、ルカニ・ロサー農業協同組合は、その品質の豆が揃うまで長い時間待たなければならなかった。幸い村では新しいコーヒー豆の皮をむく機械を購入することができた。これで日本が必要とする高品質のコーヒー豆の準備がしやすくなるだろう。 辻村英之さんが8月に村を訪れたとき、村支援のための1,000ドルの寄付（ルカニコーヒーのフェアトレード・プロジェクトの還元金：訳注）をしてくれた。村人を代表して、日本の協力者の皆様にわたしたちの心からの感謝の気持ちを送ります。
9月には村人たちは日本からのコーヒースタディツアーを受け入れた。ツアーの皆さんは、村人の農場、やまた新しいコーヒー豆の皮むき機を使用している場所を訪ね、コーヒーが衛生的な機械のもとに低温で、皮をむかれ、洗われ、乾燥させられているようすを見ることができた。
そのほかの社会福祉関係の出来事 数年間閉まっていた村の診療所が再開した。現在、村人たちが自宅の近くで診療を受けられるようになった。 また、村では12月初旬に日本のNHKテレビの取材を受けた。
これらが今年のルカニ村にあった出来事である。
もう一度、ルカニ村民を代表してこの機会を感謝するとともに皆さんがルカニ村にいらして楽しい滞在をされることを願っています。
