ルカニ村便り/Habari kutoka Lukani - Lukani up date・2014 No.2

WEATHER Year 2014 for the people of Lukani is the best one, compare to the past 30 years. It is the only year the people exprience a very good rainfall on time and the crops could get enough water while growing, the crops includes maize, bananas, and coffee, even the cows cold get enough grass for thir feedings. Some of the villagers said the period in which we had a similar weather is during seventies. So this weather will result on a good harvest of bananas, coffee and other crops (vegetables etc)

AT This year we have about 4 members of alternativeTour who visted Lukanifrom 24th August to 28th August, They enjoy a very good weather , and they could harvest coffee, although the coffee harvest season is usual from october but this year we could harvest coffee from august this is becouse of good rain fall this year.

COFFEE STATUS As a result of good weather this year, some villagers have planted a new coffee seeds. They bought from our new centre of cofffee seeds initiated by TACRI (Tanzania coffee Research Institute) new village office. We expect a good harvest next year, for the first time when I visited Lukani village with a coffee study Tour member this year, we find that the coffee harvest season is just began. This due to enough rain fall from january to now. I visited Lukani with some members of coffee study tour from 6th SEP to 12th SEP, am happy that most of them enjoy the good feeling about Lukani weather. We visited some villagers around my house, the day care center in which is managed by Mwalim Kimaro, a church as a one of the communalgethering on sunday (99% of Lukani people are christians), so on sunday all people goes to church for spritual prayers.

We also visited water intake system 2km inside the forest. We also visited Liwate market as a communal activities. We also visited a coffee nursery initiated by TACRI, and Mr Kimaro the expert from TACRI explained to us about establishment of coffee nursery. From there we travel to Moshi were we visted the coffee curing to see how the process of grading the coffee and later brought to the Auction. We visited coffee Action center in Moshi runed by TANZANIA COFFEE BOARD, were the people from all over the world can buy coffee in auction. Finaly we visited a very big farm of Tchibo plantation farm were we see coffee field of more that 200 ha.

SECONDARY SCHOOL The secondary school in Lukani is getting better and better. 6 students who sat for form four examination last year could manage to join high school compare to only one the previous year. Although the school building didint change from last year stil no libarary, no staff office and no laboratory for the sciece students , but luckily we are expecting to have donation from the Embassy of Japan to construct staff office, library and laboratory. Prof.Tsujimura had assisted initiating this application under LUDEA (Lukani Development Association). We thanks Prof.Tsujimura for his good asistance to Lukani people. It is my sincere hope that if we get this assistant to construct to contruct a library and laboratory in Lukani Sec. School shall lead to increase performance of academic status in Lukani Sec. School I thank you for all who visited Lukani hope you come again.

天候 　2014年はルカニの村人たちにとって、過去30年間で最高の年になりそうです。いい時期にたっぷりとした降雨があり、作物は成長期に十分な水がありました。作物とはトウモロコシ、バナナ、コーヒーなどで、ウシたちも飼料の草をたっぷり得た経験を持てた唯一の年でした。 ある村人たちは似たような天候は70年代にもあったと言います。そしてこの天候は、バナナやコーヒーやほかの野菜などの作物の豊作をもたらすでしょう。

AT 　今年のオルタナティブ・ツアーでは4人が8月24日から28日までルカニ村を訪れました。好天に恵まれ、コーヒー収穫体験をすることもできました。通常なら収穫時期は10月なのですが、今年はとてもよい降雨量のために8月でもできたのです。

コーヒーの状況 　今年のよい天候に励まされ、幾人かの村人たちは新しいコーヒーの苗を植えました。TACRI（タンザニアコーヒー調査研究所）の村の事務所が配布した新しいコーヒーの種子を購入したのです。来年のよい収穫を期待しています。 　コーヒー・スタディ・ツアーのメンバーたちと一緒にルカニ村に来た時には、すでにコーヒー収穫シーズンが始まっていました。これは、一月から現在に至るまで十分な雨量が得られたからです。ツアーは9月6日から12日に行なわれました。参加者のみなさんはルカニの気候に喜んでいたので、嬉しく思いました。わたしたちは、村人たちの家や、キマロ先生が運営しているデイケアセンターや日曜日に村の人びとがお祈りのために集まる教会（ルカニ村民の99％はクリスチャン）などを訪ねました。 　また、森のなかに2kmほど入ったところにある取水口やコミュニティ活動の一環としてのラワテ市場やTACRIの行なっているコーヒー苗木場へも行きました。コーヒー苗木場ではTACRIの専門家のキマロさんがコーヒー苗木場の成り立ちについて説明してくれました。その後、モシへ行く途中で、コーヒー加工工場にも立ち寄り、どのようにしてコーヒー豆がグレード分けされ、オークション会場に運ばれるかの過程を見学しました。 　タンザニアコーヒー公社によって運営されているモシのコーヒーオークションセンターも訪れました。そこには、世界中からオークションでコーヒーを買うために人々が集まります。 　最後に20ha以上あるチボ・プランテーションのとても大きなコーヒー農場へも行きました。

中学校 　ルカニ中学校はだんだん良くなってきています。中学4年生の国家試験に一昨年は1人しか合格しませんでしたが、昨年は6人が合格しました。しかし、校舎は依然として、図書館、職員室、理系の生徒のための実験室がありません。 　ただ、幸運なことに、日本大使館からの寄付でこれらが建設できるかもしれません。辻村先生がLUDEA（ルカニ開発協会）のもとでのこの申し込みするにあたって助けてくれました。わたしたちは辻村先生のルカニ村民への支援に感謝しています。図書館、職員室、実験室建設の支援が得られることを心から願っています。それはルカニ村中学校の環境の充実と活躍につながるでしょう。 　ルカニ村に来てくださった皆さん、どうもありがとう。そして、またいらしてくださいね。
